Originally a primary trail between Fort Edmonton and “God’s Lake” (Lac Ste. Anne), the road we now know as St. Albert Trail has its roots in 1860 as a shipping route for whitefish, though it wasn’t established as St. Albert Trail until 1889. When the railways on Edmonton’s south side arrived in 1891, Edmonton stopped being an isolated community and, by staying on the north side, asserted its independence from Calgary, which allowed it to become a major city. In 1904, Edmonton went from being a little boomtown to becoming a big city with a government run by developers and businessmen. Interestingly, however, the municipality started taking over privately-owned utilities and street car companies – for the benefit of upcoming commercial and residential developments. In 1909, due to a growing urban sprawl that extended to St. Albert, the Interurban Railway operated along St. Albert Trail, marking it even then as an important connection between municipalities and an important commercial route. In 1960, it became a four lane highway, and today, planning is underway for an Edmonton to St. Albert LRT extension.
Like many of Edmonton’s arterial roadways, St. Albert Trail is a road with more than one name. Beginning as Groat Road in West Edmonton, the road becomes St. Albert Trail at the 118 Avenue roundabout before crossing Yellowhead Trail, then crossing 137 Avenue before it becomes Mark Messier Trail, and eventually, Alberta Highway 2. In 2009, the St. Albert portion of the road was renamed after Edmonton Oilers alum and former St. Albert Saints player, Mark Messier.
A major commercial artery in West Central and North Edmonton, St. Albert Trail intersects with 118 Avenue at a roundabout, where you’ll find Circle Square, a retail and office development. Across the street, on the east side of St. Albert trail is Edmonton’s beloved Sherbrooke Liquor store. From there to Yellowhead Trail, the road is sandwiched by residential properties, but north of Yellowhead St. Albert Trail is home to over 6km of commercial real estate, including industrial shops and warehouses and retail shops and outlets. Industrial parks, Bonaventure and McArthur are right on the trail, while Brown Industrial and Hagmann Estate Industrial flank either side of St. Albert Trail on the Yellowhead. These parks are home to established industrial businesses like Nelson Lumber, Windsor Plywood, and Steel-Craft, along with car washes and self-storage facilities. But the area is also home to cultural hubs like the Dutch Canadian Club, the Italian Cultural Society, and the Siri Guru Nanak Sikh Gurdwara temple and non-profit organizations like Oteenow Employment & Training Society and Chrysalis.
St. Albert Trail is also a centre on the north side for car dealerships including North Edmonton KIA, Norden Volkswagen, Go Nissan North, Northstar Hyundai, and Toyota Northwest Edmonton all located near the 137 Avenue and St. Albert Trail intersection where you’ll also find Christy’s Corner. A business and retail destination, Christy’s Corner anchors the area with a Cineplex Odeon Cinemas, World Health Club, Moxie’s, Memory Express, Famoso, Golf Town, and Sleep Country. And while the area is established, St. Albert Trail is a main road on the city’s northside that attracts traffic in the retail, business, and industrial sectors with growth opportunities for medical and professional businesses to serve the area.
